PostgreSQL Databases

Pronounced “post gress cue ell.” PostgreSQL is an open source database system that began as an enhancement to the POSTGRES research prototype DBMS. Where POSTGRES used the PostQuel query language, PostgreSQL uses a subset of SQL.

It has several features not available on other free dbms’s including triggers and sub-selects.

PostgreSQL is available only for Linux.

MySQL Databases

Most popular open-source relational database. Many Unix-based plans allow MySQL databases.

MySQL is a free open source relational database management system, which is actually one of the fastest on the market.

MySQL is offered mostly by Linux hosts. However there are ports available for Windows.

Pronounced “my ess cue el” (each letter separately) and not “my SEE kwill.” MySQL is an open source RDBMS that relies on SQL for processing the data in the database.

MySQL is most commonly used for Web applications and for embedded applications and has become a popular alternative to proprietary database systems because of its speed and reliability. MySQL can run on UNIX, Windows and Mac OS.

MySQL is developed, supported and marketed by MySQL AB. The database is available for free under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL) or for a fee to those who do not wish to be bound by the terms of the GPL.

Parked domains

In the Web hosting business, Domain parking is a service that the Web host will offer to its clients as a way of securing a domain name for future use.

The Web host registers the domain name with the InterNIC and “parks” the domain name on a server until it is ready to be made active.

By doing this, the Web host ensures the availability of the domain name for the client’s future use so that another individual or company cannot register that same domain name.

Subdomains

Also called a child domain, a domain that is part of a larger domain name in DNS hierarchy.

DNS hierarchy consists of the root-level domain at the top, underneath which are the top-level domains, followed by second-level domains and finally subdomains.

For example, in the domain name html.example.com, “html” is a subdomain of the larger second-level domain “example.com.”
